R O M A N Z A
What has sex appeal, charm, and talent? The answer is ROMANZA. This incredible group of three classically trained singers can make women of any age ‘swoon’ and captures the hearts of all whether one’s taste is classical music, pop, opera, musical theatre or well loved ballads. Audiences sit mesmerized.
Philip Grant, Todd Jang and Frederik Robert make up ROMANZA . Violin, double bass and piano accompany them. When asked how the group was formed, Philip Grant confesses, “We worked together in a previous professional engagement and truth be told, were sitting in a restaurant and came up with the idea to create ROMANZA. He chuckles. “we choose music we love to sing; music all three of us are passionate about. It is wonderful to be able to do this and the audience feels it. On stage - the music, the words and the sense of responsibility to the other musicians performing with me inspire me. And when the lights are up, it is breathtaking to see the smiles on the faces of the audience.”
ROMANZA performed over 100 concerts in 2008 -09 season throughout North America. Grant adds, “My favorite moments on tour are the ones that are fresh and vibrant: having performed together so often, it becomes a challenge every night to make each moment alive so it is very rewarding when we collectively achieve that with an audience.” Given the popularity of the three-tenor repertoire - ROMANZA captures the essence of this with each performance.
It is not all seriousness and sex appeal that makes this group so appealing to many. Their sense of humour is infectious and their antics on stage are, at times, hilarious. They play the best repertoire including “Funiculi, Funicula (Denza), “Danny Boy”, “Because We Believe” (Foster), and “Bring Him Home” (Les Miserables, Schonberg). Their Christmas programs include traditional favourites and often include local community choirs. It is the blending of ‘light and serious’, ‘traditional and new’, that keeps audiences enthralled.
ROMANZA are friends on and off stage and you can see this in their performance – they are genuine and real.
