People
Speyfest audiences have grown to expect the very best Celtic music around and they were served ample portions from Tiller’s Folly, whose high-energy performances had the crowds on their feet shouting for more. The band are all masters in their own right and their music and audience rapport earned them the sheer adulation of the Celtic music lovers at Speyfest.

– James Alexander/Artistic Director of Speyfest, Fochabars, Scotland

[Coughlan’s] vocals are a wonderful cross between a finely aged whiskey and a lion’s roar.  The Tiller’s Folly gives the kind of music that will shake you from your head to your toes – music that draws you in and compels you to listen. Tiller’s music reaches deep into your soul, bringing up feelings and emotions that touch your heart. The entire band are MONSTER specialists on their instruments, great performers, and above all just super-nice people . . . the embodiment of the phrase “true professionals.”

– Robin Weinman, Program Director, Eastern Oregon University, La Grande, Oregon

You obviously love performing and your many hours of practicing and working together on stage has put you right up there with the best of them.

- Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia, Victoria, B.C.

We recommend Tiller’s Folly to any presenting organization that looks for first-rate musicianship and vocals, great interaction with an audience, an all around professionalism in every aspect of our relationship during the 34 show tour of the US midwest.

I have heard over and over again how much folks enjoyed the variety and calibre of music and I want to pass on to you just how happy you made our community.

- Anna Manildi, Director, Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts, Port Angeles, WA.

The excellent musicianship and delightful staging really made the evening a success. I particularly enjoyed the addition of the two Irish dancers. Their youthful vigor, beautiful costumes and high-stepping dancing were a great complement to the jigs and reels.

– Sandra Thomson, General Manager, The Port Theatre, Nanaimo, B.C.

The concert was a wonderful success – the music was fabulous . . .

- Joan Andersen, Regional Director of CBC Radio, B.C.

Your music made us all want to clap our hands, or get up and dance in the aisles. Your great energy, talent, and enthusiasm for your music are contagious. Sales of your CDs broke a long-standing record for the most sales at a Community concert!

Bruce is a true bard (a collector of songs) and the founding member of The Tiller’s Folly. A career performer, touring throughout Western Canada since his teens, Bruce has developed a keen knowledge of the history of the Pacific region, while obtaining a solid background in performing and music. His love and passion for the characters and tales of The Pacific Northwest has proven fertile ground for his exceptional songwriting and singing skills. A multifaceted talent destined for recognition as a great Canadian songwriter/storyteller in a class with Stan Rogers or Gordon Lightfoot.

Laurence

LAURENCE KNIGHT

Laurence is a musician with the incredible depth of over 30 years of performing and recording experience, during which time he has performed with many of the brightest lights of the Vancouver music scene. In this time he has performed and recorded with a variety of different artists in many genres (from Raffi to Doucette to Roy Forbes to Ferron to Jim Byrnes.)

Laurence first encounter with Bruce goes back some 20 years when he was hired as a session player on one of Bruce’s early projects. They’ve developed a strong partnership over the past 12 years.   Laurence’s production and business savvy teamed up with Bruce’s songwriting and artistic direction creates a whole much greater than the sum of its parts.

Nolan brought his dynamic musical talent to Tiller’s Folly in 2001 during the recording of A Ripple In Time.  In 2004, Tiller’s Folly members teamed up to record Nolan’s fourth CD, Off the Beaten Path.

About The New Songs

TAKE PRIDE: This is a catchy message song that all can relate to. Bruce wrote this song for his son Liam, who has trouble fitting in at school and feels like a square peg in the proverbial round whole. Bruce "This song came about while considering the question, "If I had one enduring message to leave my son, what would it be?". It has a Green Day Type feel and is quite a rocker for Tiller's.

A RIVER SO WIDE: The title track is a song drawn from personal experience. The law of Karma dictates that what goes around will eventually come back around. It's also a song about getting over things and coming out the other side. Ex Tiller's Folly Eric Reed offers some exquisite slide work which plays nicely off Nolan's mandolin. This is an early band and friends favourite.

IRISH ROSE: This song was inspired by Bruce's daughter and borrows (quite blatantly) from the legendary Robbie Burns. This song features an inspired vocal track. It's a great straight ahead acoustic pop tune.

THINGS I HAVEN'T DONE: Time passes by in a heartbeat, and a good strategy to adapt might be to minimize accumulative regret. This piece was inspired by a poster of the CCR album Cosmo's Factory and features Bruce and incredible guest vocalist John Cowan trading off verses and the first sight of legendary keyboardist Larry Knechtel on hammond organ.

TRANQUILITY: Nolan joined Tiller's Folly just after his mom passed away. He wrote this melody in her honour and Bruce wrote the lyrics based on talks with Nolan and all the Murray family. It features slinky guitar from Eric, a great vocal performance from Bruce with help from John and Nolan's emotional fiddle on the reprise in the new key. This song makes people cry.

TOGETHER: A rare foray into the land of love songs, this song is for all the couples who have stuck it out through thick and thin. The mandolin and slide guitar really stand out on this song and the chorus is a winner. Another stand out rhythm track from Laurence and guest and part- time Tiller's member Chris Nordquist.

BREAK THE CHAIN: We all fall in to patterns from time to time, some, not so positive. The true romantic in Bruce wants to believe that true love will conquer all. This is a moody atmospheric piece of music with a strong chorus and a great bridge. Another excellent vocal from Bruce, and who would have thought mandolin would sound so great as a solo instrument. It brings to mind artists like Roxy Music and Chris Issac. Another great mix with luscious reverbs from Steven Drake "the mixmaster".

CHATHAM REACH: There are few places in the world that can match the natural beauty of British Columbia's Fraser Valley. One of the valley's most scenic vistas is the view looking north up the Pitt River toward Pitt Lake (the world's only tidal freshwater lake), at a stretch of the river known as Chatham Reach. This is one of Laurence's favourites bed's and again features John on those high high vocals and Larry on the hammond. It brings to mind some of the great acoustic tracks from acts like The Band and is a song from the great Celtic tradition immortalizing the natural beauty of the writer's home.

LAST OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS: A Tiller's Folly CD would not be complete without a historical track. When the colony of British Columbia was established in the year 1858, British Colonial Secretary, Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, dispatched a contingent of Her Majesty's Royal Engineers to the Pacific Northwest. The Royal Engineers under Colonel Richard Clements Moody had a profound influence on the territory they surveyed. Their names adorn towns and landmarks throughout the province and we drive upon the very routes they mapped out 150 years ago. Many of the Royal Engineers remained in British Columbia as pioneers and continued to change the face of the province, such a person was Philip Jackman. When he passed away in 1927 he had lived an amazing 69 years in BC.

CHESTNUT LANE: A song co-written by Bruce and Nolan - dedicated to fathers everywhere. The melody was inspired by the legendary American songwriter A.P. Carter. This song just seems to make people happy and seemed a fitting end to the CD. The Wurlitzer keyboard track of Larry's on this tune is a masterpiece of understatement from a true master. Sadly the chestnut trees from the Chestnut Lane have recently been cut down.
